Development of Kanji instructional material for university JFL courses: Toward more effective self-learning

Noriko YABUKI-SOH, Kumiko INUTSUKA

Because of globalization and advancements in technology, L2 Japanese learners’ environments are constantly changing, and instructional material for learning Kanji needs to correspond to such changes. In comparison to those who study Japanese inside Japan, many learners who study the language in non-Kanji countries have limited opportunities for exposure to Kanji outside the classroom, and commercially available instructional material often fails to fulfill learners’ varying needs. Considering these circumstances, in the university Japanese language program that the authors belong to, a “Kanji List” based on our own online instructional material has been developed to facilitate users’ independent learning of Kanji. In the present study, we illustrate the process of developing this instructional material and report its users’ views on Kanji learning strategies and their responses to the material based on our survey results. We also comparatively investigate some free online instructional material and discuss possibilities for further improvement of our material. In conclusion, in order to develop effective instructional material, it is necessary not only to enhance its content and function, but also to take into consideration users’ views on how to improve it so that they can become more autonomous learners.
