Language Learning in the 21st Century: Expanding Horizons, Blurring Boundaries and Emerging Possibilities

Naoko AOKI

Since the turn of the century, the world has dramatically changed. Global migration has been accelerated and, with the increasing share of low cost carriers in the aviation market, people cross national borders as easily as ever. The phenomenal development of internet and mobile technologies have also facilitated connecting people irrespective of the physical distance among them. In the context of higher education, globalization has become a big issue and the number of students crossing borders to study abroad has more than doubled over the past ten years or so. These social changes have greatly affected the field of language education. Japanese language education is no exception. In this paper I shall first look at the changes and discuss how they are affecting language education and what challenges they pose to language educators. Then I shall suggest ways to meet the challenges, drawing on five trends in applied linguistics; learners’ self, subjectivity and identities, language learning beyond the classroom, language advising, self-access language learning, and new literacies and popular culture.

What Makes Learners’ Aizuchi and Head Nods Unnatural?: Native Speakers’ Evaluations of Learners’ Listener Behaviors

Chiemi HANZAWA

This study examines native speakers’ evaluations of learners’ verbal listener responses (aizuchi) and nonverbal listener responses (head nods) in Japanese conversation. Video recordings of 14 NS-NNS free conversation (8 minutes) and 14 NS-NNS narrative story-telling (1-2 minutes) were used as evaluation material. As evaluators, three native speakers who were not engaged in the NS-NNS conversation above participated in this study. Evaluators were asked to watch 28 video recordings and to 1) mark the learner’s aizuchi or head nods that they thought were unnatural, and 2) comment on the lack of aizuchi or head nods in the discourse. As a result, among 1286 aizuchi and head nods, 74 were marked as unnatural by at least two evaluators among three, and there were 5 comments regarding the lack of aizuchi or head nods. Aizuchi and head nods that were perceived as unnatural by evaluators were categorized as follows: use of English expressions, lack of politeness in aizuchi use, and the use of aizuchi or head nods that are not appropriate in the given discourse.

Literacy Acquisition Issues and Support for Immigrant Women in International Marriages from the Standpoint of Social Support

Rumiko MUKAI・Makiko SHINYA・Shino TAKAHASHI

The purpose of this paper is, along with shedding light on the issue of literacy acquisition among married immigrant women in Japan, to suggest a new proposal based on case studies in a particular area of Japan, referred to hereafter as Region X. In a literacy class for married immigrant women in Region X the number of participants who continued was limited, and among those who did continue, there were some who, even though they hoped to learn to read and write, felt uncomfortable with writing. When we conducted an investigation to ascertain how these women managed with kanji in their everyday lives and whether someone was helping them, it became evident that there was a possibility that interaction with family and friends had an effect on continued attendance and discomfort with writing kanji.  In light of these results, we need to consider what kind of learning literacy support is appropriate for married immigrant women from the standpoint of social support which aims to improve personal relationships and emotional health, and to propose how to prepare them as they move on to new life stages.

Onomatopoeia Related to Food Textures in Japanese: A Comparative Study of Swedish, English, and Korean

Ayaka MUTO

This paper investigates expressions relating to taste as used by native speakers of Swedish, English, and Korean. Their responses to questions were analyzed, and three points were considered: (1) Kind of taste expressions: It is said that there are many words to describe taste in Japanese, but how about other languages such as Swedish, English and Korean? (2) Classification of taste expressions: Is it possible to classify the taste expressions in other languages by using the Japanese “taste words classification list” (Seto 2003)? (3) Texture expressions: It is said that Japanese has many words to express texture, how about other languages? The conclusion is as follows: (1) Many of the taste expressions in Japanese exist in English, Korean and Swedish. (2) After classifying taste expressions in other languages using the Japanese taste words classification list, several words from each language fit almost every category of the classification list. (3) In English, Korean and Swedish, many texture expressions exist. However, Japanese provides far more expressions to describe texture. Since this variety of descriptions for texture is a defining characteristic of Japanese, it is important to discuss how this can be taught to Japanese learners.
