Position Description  

The Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University seeks a Lector/Senior Lector I in Japanese language with a3-year full-time appointment starting on July 1, 2025 and continuing until June30, 2028. Renewal is contingent on excellent performance and sufficientenrollments. Primary duties include teaching six courses or the equivalent peryear, which can be realized through teaching five term courses in the languagesequence with a sixth equivalent of effort in, for example, administration andcourse coordination.  

Salary and rank are commensurate with experience andqualifications. If the initial appointment is at the rank of Lector, apromotion review for Senior Lector I must take place in the fifth year orearlier. Senior lectors at Yale are expected to participate in teaching-relatedprofessional activities (e.g., workshops, seminars, training activities,conferences) and have no limits on reappointment, provided there is successfulperformance and ongoing curricular need.   Lectors are eligible for Yale’s generous package ofbenefits, including health coverage, and they are encouraged to participate inthe wide range of professional development opportunities offered through theCenter for Language Study, the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, and theFaculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office.  

Qualifications Applicantsmust have: 1) native or near-native fluency in Japanese; 2) a bachelor’s degreeor the equivalent, by the time of hire. It is strongly preferred thatapplicants have: 1) experience teaching Japanese in a U.S. university orequivalent to heritage and non-heritage learners, using current teachingmethodologies; 2) M.A. or Ph.D., by the time of hire, in second-languagepedagogy, Japanese language/linguistics, applied linguistics, or other relatedfield. Experience in curriculum development and incorporating technology in theclassroom is desirable. Research profile in foreign language pedagogy is a plus.
