I arrived at the University of Wisconsin-Madison two days before the conference to familiarize myself with the venue. As soon as I got off the bus, Madison’s sizzling heat and sticky humid air welcomed me as a guest on the University, which is located on the ancestral Ho-Chunk land. Memorial Union, where the conference took place, is located right by Lake Mendota, preserving the history of the building. The city of Madison was charming for its tight-knit community, and I felt the University is an integral part of Madison socially, leisurely, and economically.

During the conference, I had the opportunities to interact with a number of scholars and educators who are passionate about Japanese language education. On Day 2, I presented my paper on queer identity construction and implications for classroom teaching and learning. The room, which is aesthetically pleasing with the original charm of the building, was full of audience. I still recall the faces in the room and joyful moments of presenting and having conversation with the audience there. After my presentation, some people provided feedback and posed questions regarding my epistemological stance, methodology, and practical implications. The thought-provoking dialogues that I had were invaluable as my research work tends to be in isolation. Through the dialogues, I was able to expand my knowledge about the issue regarding queer identity in Japanese language education. Besides my own presentation, I attended some of the presentations and workshops of my interest. One of the workshops I attended was theoretically robust and practically useful for developing my scholarly work and practicing inclusion in classrooms. All the sessions I attended have inspired my thinking in differing ways.

In addition to the scholarly networking, I was able to connect with some people more personally. In particular, I enjoyed interacting with other graduate students coming from various places internationally. We discussed research, career opportunities, and personal lives as graduate students. One of the graduate students I met happened to be my Vancouver friend’s friend. Such a small world! We made some time to have coffee during the conference and promised to meet again in Vancouver or West Lafayette. I cannot wait to see these new contacts again at conferences or somewhere in the future.

I am grateful for the opportunity to visit Madison and present my work at ICJLE 2024 thanks to the support from the Prince Takamado Japan Centre for Teaching and Research and CAJLE. The experiences I had would not have been possible without their support. Now, I am back in Vancouver with aspirations for further research to continue to make contributions to the field of Japanese language education in general and Canadian Japanese language education in particular. ありがとうございました。

ICJLE2024での基調講演やシンポジウム、世界中で活躍される日本語教師の方々の発表を聞いて、日本語学習者の持つ背景がますます多様化していることを強く認識しました。例えば継承語学習者、日本語非母語話者教師、多様なジェンダーの背景を持つ学習者に関する研究等の発表があり、私にとってとても興味深く刺激的な学会でした。世界における教育現場や学習者の特性が変われば、応じて研究課題や注力すべき実践例に違いが見られることが分かりました。また、今回は大学院生向けのワークショップにも参加しました。同じ専門分野の研究者や一般の方々に対して、相手の持つ知識の深さを考慮した上で、分かりやすく自身の研究を伝える方法について議論を深めました。また、自身の研究について即興で語れるよう、普段から研究の動機や研究に至る経緯についてまとめておくことの大切さを痛感しました。

　ワークショップで学んだことを元に、この場をお借りして、ICJLE2024で発表した私自身の研究について簡潔に紹介させていただきます。修士論文では、カナダの大学で日本語を学ぶアジア人留学生とカナダ人学習者を対象に、外国語不安について研究しました。結果として、多くのアジア人留学生はクラスメイトの前で日本語を間違えることを恐れていました。一方で一部のカナダ人学習者は周囲の目を気にすることはないが、初めて学ぶ文法や語彙に触れた際に不安を感じていることが判明しました。この研究により、学習者が持つ特性やバックグラウンドに焦点を当てた研究の必要性を強く感じ、自身がこれから取り組むべき研究アイデアをいくつか得ることができました。

　今後は日本の博士課程に進み、アジア人外国語学習者の心理的要因に焦点を当てた研究を継続していきます。世界中の多様な背景を持つ外国語学習者に貢献するためにも、研究課題に隣接する分野にも視野を広げていきたいと思っています。

　最後に、安達先生、岸本先生、日本語クラスの参観をさせていただき、本当にありがとうございました。そしてCAJLEの実行委員会の先生方、高円宮日本教育研究センターの皆様、私をトラベルグラントの受給者として選定していただき、心より感謝申し上げます。またいつかICJLEで研究成果を発表できるよう、今後も研究活動に精一杯励んでいきます。

ICJLE 2024では3日間の日程で三つの基調講演、二つのシンポジウム、三つのワークショップ、250以上の発表を予定しています。

参加登録はすでに始まっており、4月30日までに登録すると早期割引が適用になります。参加登録が完了した方には、会場近くのホテルと寮の割引価格での予約リンクが送られます。ワークショップ参加や宿泊は数に限りがありますので、どうぞお早めに参加登録・宿泊の予約をお済ませください。

また、対面参加できない方のためにリモート参加枠も用意いたしました。大会はハイブリッドではありませんが、基調講演とシンポジウムの録画や発表者から提供された発表資料へのアクセスができ、8月中旬にCAJLEが開催するオンラインイベントに参加いただけます。リモート参加も、対面参加の登録と同様、ICJLE参加登録ページからお申し込みください。

The International Conference on Japanese Language Education (ICJLE) will be held in-person for the first time in six years, under the theme “Exploring Issues of Diversity and Expertise in Japanese Language Education”. The American Association for Teaching Japanese (AATJ) and the Canadian Association for the Promotion of Japanese Language Education (CAJLE) cordially invite you to attend the conference.

ICJLE 2024 will feature 3 keynote lectures, 2 symposia, 3 workshops, and over 250 presentations over three days.

Registration is open, and early bird discounts are available for those who register by April 30. Upon successful registration, you will receive a link to reserve a hotel and a dormitory near the venue at a discounted rate. The capacity for workshops and lodging is limited, so please be sure to register early.

Remote participation option is also available for those unable to attend on site. The conference is not hybrid, but you will have access to recordings of the keynote speeches and symposia, access to presentation materials provided by the presenters, and participate in an online event hosted by CAJLE in mid-August. Remote participation can be registered at the same page for in-person participation.

Thanks to the support of the Prince Takamado Japan Center for Teaching and Research, Blue Tree Books, and private donations, we can subsidize the remote registration fee for 40 CAJLE members residing in Canada. Institution: Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS)

The Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies (KCJS) is seeking applicants for a position of Japanese language instructor. This is a full-time appointment with an initial one-year term, starting on July 1, 2024, and the possibility of renewal for an additional one year contingent upon funding and performance.

Responsibilities include teaching a variety of Japanese language courses from beginning- to advanced-level (2 lessons per day; 10 lessons per week (1 lesson = 60 minutes), and developing curriculum, providing advising and academic support to students, and collaborating with the faculty and staff for KCJS to better serve the international academic community.

Applicants must have a minimum of an M.A. in Japanese linguistics, language pedagogy, second-language acquisition, or a related field. Requirements include native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English, experience teaching Japanese to English speakers such as teaching at colleges in English-speaking countries, and evidence of on-going commitment to language teaching.

Applicants should provide (1) cover letter, (2) a current curriculum vitae in English (Japanese-style resume is not accepted), (3) statement of teaching philosophy in Japanese, (4) unedited teaching video (YouTube link, for example), (5) two letters of recommendation, and (6) student evaluations of at least one course to Dr. Miyuki Nishimata, KCJS Japanese Language Coordinator, at mf2249@columbia.edu. Please send all files in PDF format.

The deadline for application is March 30, 2024. Applications will be processed on a rolling basis, so please submit your application promptly.

Shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interview scheduling after document review. Web interviews using Zoom may be conducted depending on the situation.

第３７回JLTANE学会を主催いたします、ウェスリアン大学の丸田です。

学会開催日は２０２４年５月１１日(土)に決定いたしました。当初は対面での開催を視野に入れておりましたが、昨年度のExit Surveyでオンライン希望の声が大半を占めていたこともあり、今回もオンラインで行う運びとなりました。

　2023年3月26日国際交流基金トロント日本文化センターにて、全国大会組織委員会とCAJLEの共催事業である第34回カナダ全国日本語弁論大会を開催いたしました。今回会場となったのは、ちょうど3年前新型コロナウィルスの影響で町がロックダウンとなり、急遽オンライン開催に移行せざるを得なくなったため本大会の実施が叶わなくなった場所でした。この度、その同じ場所にカナダ各地からの出場者を迎え、彼らの笑顔と熱気を肌で感じたとき、関係者一同胸に熱いものがこみ上げてくる思いでした。

　大会では例年通り、カナダの７つの地区大会にて初級・中級・上級・オープンの４つのカテゴリーで第一位を受賞した出場者たちが、それぞれのスピーチを披露してくれました。日本語という学習言語を使って、自分の経験や思いのたけを語る彼らは、だれもが堂々としていて、心の底から声援と拍手を送りたい気持ちになりました。今回は、未だ新型コロナウィルスの感染が心配される中にあったため、会場には関係者のみが集まり生配信を行うという形での実施でしたが、大会後出場者と視聴者が回答したアンケートには、ハイブリッド形式を評価する声が寄せられました。パンデミックを経て「配信」という選択肢を得た今、今後どのように大会を開催していくかを考える必要性が生まれてきていることを感じました。

　本大会は、会場を提供してくださった国際交流基金トロント日本文化センターをはじめ、在トロント日本国総領事館、高円宮センター、三井カナダファウンデーション、そしてトロントの多くの企業・団体のお力添えがあって実現いたしました。本大会の意義にご賛同くださり、あたたかいご支援を賜れましたこと、心より感謝申し上げます。ありがとうございました。
