Creating Japanese Language Classrooms Where Learners Can Be Themselves: A Gender and Sexuality Perspective

ことばは情報を伝達する手段であると同時に、使い手のアイデンティティを表現し、その人らしさを形づくる重要な要素でもあります。しかしながら、多くの日本語学習の場では、情報伝達に必要なスキルに重点が置かれ、学習者が日本語でどのように自分を表現し、自らについて語るかという点は、見過ごされがちではないでしょうか。

本ワークショップでは、特にジェンダーとセクシュアリティの観点から、日本語を自分らしく学び、自分らしく語ることについて考えます。教材に見られるジェンダー規範や教室活動において生じ得る課題を振り返るとともに、多様な学習者が安心して参加し、自分自身を表現できる環境をどのように構築できるかについて、参加者同士のディスカッションを交えながら検討します。

Language is not only a means of conveying information, but also an important resource through which speakers express their identities and construct a sense of self. However, in many Japanese language learning contexts, emphasis tends to be placed on skills necessary for information transmission, while the question of how learners express themselves and talk about who they are in Japanese is often overlooked.

This workshop explores what it means to learn and use Japanese in ways that reflect one’s authentic self, with a particular focus on gender and sexuality. We will reflect on gender norms embedded in instructional materials and consider potential issues that may arise in classroom practices. Through discussion among participants, we will examine how to create learning environments in which diverse learners can feel safe to participate and express themselves freely.

Le langage n’est pas seulement un moyen de transmettre des informations ; il constitue également une ressource essentielle permettant aux locuteurs d’exprimer leur identité et de construire leur propre manière d’être. Pourtant, dans de nombreux contextes d’enseignement du japonais, l’accent est principalement mis sur les compétences nécessaires à la communication de l’information, tandis que la manière dont les apprenants s’expriment en japonais et parlent d’eux-mêmes est souvent négligée.

Cet atelier propose de réfléchir à ce que signifie apprendre et utiliser le japonais tout en restant fidèle à soi-même, en portant une attention particulière aux questions de genre et de sexualité. Nous reviendrons sur les normes de genre présentes dans les matériels pédagogiques ainsi que sur les difficultés susceptibles d’émerger dans les pratiques de classe. À travers des échanges et des discussions entre les participants, nous examinerons comment créer des environnements d’apprentissage inclusifs dans lesquels des apprenants aux profils divers peuvent participer en toute sécurité et s’exprimer librement.

・All presenters must register for the conference.
・All your accompanying persons have to register to attend the conference.
・Those with active CAJLE membership must register for the member priced ticket to receive the member discount. Refund for the unapplied discount will not be provided if a member registers for the non-member ticket, or without renewing the membership or logging in first.
・Registrations for Conference may be cancelled by August 4th. No refund will be offered after August 4th.  Please notify us at the following email address if you wish to cancel your registration: cajle.kaikei@gmail.com However, registration for reception cannot be cancelled and no refund is offered.
・Pre-conference is Wednesday, August 17th 1-3pm @ East Asian Studies Lounge (14-080), Robarts Library, University of Toronto 

Reception

・Accompanying guest :If you bring in a guest who is 13 years or older, you need to register for their ticket at $60 per person.
・Children: Five years old or younger do not need registration. Children between the ages of 6 and 12 require a registration at $30 per person.
